Blood for Oil - The Niger Delta Crisis

Tags: blood for oil, nigerian oil and gas market, Politics & power, conflict in niger delta

According to Martin Bashir and Vanity Fair Contributor Sebastian Junger.. the U.S could be in for a major recession because of Nigerian Militants staging war against the US companies harvesting oil from the US's 5th Largest supply hub, the Niger Delta. This has been an ongoing struggle since the early 90's but recently has gotten so bad, no one can turn the blind eye to it anymore.

Could a bunch of Nigerian militants in speedboats bring about a U.S. recession? Blowing up facilities and taking hostages, they are wreaking havoc on the oil production of America's fifth-largest supplier. Deep in the Niger-delta swamps, the author meets the nightmarish result of four decades of corruption.

[ Read The Whole Article Here ]

They have kidnapped several oil workers, firebombed and done mass damage. They don't stop unless a hefty ransom is paid.

Their reasoning? 400 Billion has been stolen over the last decade from Nigeria. Yes 400 Billion, from the oil industry alone! That's 242 youtube Google acquisitions. Nothing has gone back to the people of this country, it's still one of the poorest places to be in the world! To top it off, the effects the oil industry have done to the land in Nigeria is absolutely astonishing.

Large count of infant fatality due to air born gases and contamination of waters, major problems with acid rain corroding their buildings, rails, vehicles, utensils tools, boats etc.. The fish count has dropped significantly as well from the pollution in the waters. All they can find for food is tiny minnows and shell craps. Not enough to feed the families or even to resell to make income as a fisherman to local markets anymore.

This is a major problem that happened all over the world, and the MEND (Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta) are out to firebomb, kidnap and pretty make it really hard to do business in Nigeria. On one account they forced Shell alone to cancel 477,000 barrels of oil a day in export. Apparently if they continue the disruption and combined with other terrorist attacks on the oil industry the barrels of oil could reach $120. That means $5.00 a gallon at the stations, or a middle income family would spend over 16% of it's income on gas and oil alone.

Apparently 31 of 36 government officials in Nigeria are corrupt. One that was recently arrested (and was the head of the oil and gas portion of his region) was found to have over 8 different multi-million dollar mansions and various properties around the world, as well as a few dozen accounts sheltered by the British and us officials for him, with billions in it.

One scary thought about this is MEND's goal is to eventually force all American oil production to pull out of Nigeria, which would then lead the way for the Chinese to take over the drilling and get the oil supply they need to grow faster than they already are.

Quick Fact: the weapons they are using are apparently very high end, and alot of money is fueling MEND's efforts. They are not typical weapons you would find anywhere near an African war site.

Children Of Men - Review 4/5

Tags: children of men, clive owen

Imagine the youngest human was no more than 18 years old. Infertility plagues the earth. No one knows the answer. The world is divided by chaos, supremest and refugees fleeing their country in the millions in a post plagued pandemic world.

It doesn't sound that far fetched does it? Based in 2027 Children of men attempts to give us a glimpse into the world of Great Britain. The story of a Fugi (a fugitive woman) who is the first pregnant women in 18 years, fighting for her life to show the world the first new born, to give them all hope for the future. But several groups attempt to claim the baby for themselves, as fuel for an uprising.

Clive Owen plays "Theo" a drunk, washed up gambler, with the passion for life lost, when the death of his son Dillon by the plague, ruins his marriage with Julian ( played by Jullianne Moore).

Action packed, intense ride through twists and paranoia in a post pandemic world.

The only reason this isn't a 5/5 is because I felt the camera work, and cinematography could have been a bit better. Although some of the action scenes are curve balls.

German Sheppard Hero Dog -

Tags: german sheppard, pet is a hero, hero dog

This was a good tear jerker story about a German Sheppard who saves both his owners life by digging a snow tunnel for them from an area where they were treating mended birds, to their home.

It's so clear that animals do communicate with us on a mental level when you read about these sort of stories.

Read More Here

"A seven year old German Shepherd - Timberwolf mixed dog named Shana is quite a canine hero in Alden as the story spreads of her efforts to save her owners during the October surprise storm.

Eve and Norman Fertig, who are both 81 years old, were out treating injured birds in the Wildlife Sanctuary on their Alden property on the night of October 12th. They left as the storm intensified but, were soon trapped by falling trees and heavy snow as they tried to walk back to their home. Eve realized they could die in the bitter cold but, fortunately, Shana was with them.

As the cold and snow chilled them both without heavy coats and gloves, Shana started digging under the snow and trees.

The dog actually dug a foot wide tunnel about 20 feet to the home.

Shana barked but, the couple hesitated, so they say the dog came back and tugged on Eve's jacket. She says the 160 pound dog actually pulled her onto its broad back and crawled through the tunnel. Her husband held on as well as they slowly crawled all the way back to their home. They made it back to the back deck, opened their door and fell in to the house exhausted but safe."

Mobile Road.. Social on the road.. Dating in the waves

Tags: social mobile, dating social mobile, mobile with dating software flash lite.

I'm just going to highlight a few features or rather "sites" out there that are focusing on the forward movement of getting users off the computer, and onto the mobile computer/smart-phone/telephone etc.. Also some standpoints in which restrict the movement forward quicker.

If your from Canada, were light years away (see 2) from being a smart future mobile friendly nation. Not only do our major service providers monopolize the market, they also make it bloody hard for manufacturers to roll out new features. In fact I think it's safe to say the phones we see as "new" now, are about 1.5 years - 3 years behind those seen in Japan, western Europe, Australia and abroad.

Why? CDMA (locked phones). Carriers demand knowing every inch of that phone, and make it extremely hard to get content on the phone without going through their own service plan (using Internet time, air time, text messaging etc..). Plain and simple, that's where their money comes into play. Those that are on a GSM carrier have the luxury of purchasing new GSM phones, and using them.. but the feature set accessible from the carrier is not up to par with the phones you can import.

One carrier in the US is definitely making a point by attempting to keep on the modern edge, and be "future friendly" (look up under bogus telus ad attempt).

I'm talking about Verizon. Just today they launched a new feature "Youtube on your mobile phone". Utilizing Flash Lite technology (Flash Lite) they have integrated the movies from youtube to stream on the phone. Not only will they benefit from traffic charges, but also the phones will be bundled with VCast (a service Verizon uses for movies on demand, $15 a month USD). This follows very closely to how Japan had a 15 minutes segment delivered to it's phones, that users could watch just about the time they get out of work and would be sitting on the metro. By doing so they could feed a short advertisement before the segment, and after. The support was absolutely mind-blowing for who watched it. Read more on the Japanese market and mobile here.

As TechCrunch put it "they only have access to selected video content how boring.. the beauty of you-tube was that it's so organic". My opinion is this is the start.. they'll see how it rolls out, then not to overload users UI on a phone by allowing them to access all 2Mil + videos, they hand select the top videos of the day/month that the common masses would want to show people. But that will grow just like anything else.

Read more here about this

Now where does the mobile social dating market kick in.. we'll who knows? In Australia such sites as crazysexycool are attempting to do a "clubgoer" mobile network. Other sites like Dodgeball (one message sent, streams via geo-location to all your friends in the same network to let them know where you are), and Zemble a little brother of Dodgeball, a little bit redundant, but time will tell what kind of features they will roll out. Yahoo just recently launched MixD (http://mixd.yahoo.com) which is a group text messenger. Admittedly I tried to use it, but I never received my confirmation code to my number. Perhaps it's only in the US of A.

I think people are limited by a few factors at the moment:

  • Carrier's being greedy: in fact they think prices are still too low for services rendered.
  • Technology Hump: the mass is getting more and more educated, slowly, about the capabilities of the technology at hand, but like anything this takes time. CD's were made in 1988, they were a standard in 1995 or so. You do the math  .
  • Screen Resolution / UI: you can only do so much comfortably on a 3 x 5 (inch) screen or less. Blackberry is doing well, Microsoft blew it entirely trying to port over it's vista system to a mobile device in some wacky scaled down crowded interface. They need to focus on the user, not their branding/look/feel. Focus on the user, then wrap the branding around it. It's the only way to make mobile phones comfortable for us.
  • Open-Web Stardard: Not alot of typical standards on the phones.. yes they do have WAP, XHTML, SMS short code.. But in terms of new applications.. flash lite, widsets, loads of java applications.. it makes it difficult to port for every device / phone. Not to mention the inconsistency of the processor/internal memory for the devices. I've heard rumours that this is going to change.
So what can be done? ride the wave.. embrace technology, and don't be afraid to switch carriers, or demand "more" out of your service.

Two Years, Zero Emissions - Congratulations Tim Harvey

Tags: tim harvey, vancouver to vancouver, zero emissions, go green, around the earth, bicycle, boat, run, canoe, foot, ski

Around the world, without the use of fossil fuels.

Congratulation to Mr. Tim Harvey. Originally from Vancouver this man set out on an incredible journey on June 1st 2004, and returned home on November 12th 2006. 42,000 kilometre man powered journey.

Tim and his friend had a dream "let's travel from Vancouver to Moscow, with zero-emission travel". This means travelling without the use of cars, bus, plane or any other use of travel that creates emissions.

Taken from the site Vancouver to Vancouver:

"The the dream then grew - how to make it home, and circle the world, without fossil fuels? It is taking over two years on bicycles, by foot, in rowboats, canoes, wooden raft and under sail, on a route across five continents and two oceans. From Africa to Siberia, South America to the Arctic, it has been an epic of frostbite, blizzards, bandits and high seas storms. Now on the home stretch, journalist-filmmaker Tim Harvey brings you along as he slogs for a cause - a greener future where all of us burn fewer fossil fuels. "

Tim you have definitely done an amazing achievement, and I for one solute you!

Tim is not spreading a message on removing all "teleporters" from our world (a word he uses to describe the type of travel you do, when you step into a car, or plane.. you don't see the subtle changes between the places you visit". He wants to spread a message that anything is possible, ride your bike more, support those who are doing things RIGHT for the environment, and just watch and keep track of the amount of energy you use. Try your best to reduce it, by small changes in your life.

"On his travels Tim has accepted the wisdom of Lau Tze: the journey is the reward. One need not travel to experience adventure – we can all embrace challenge, living active, adventurous lives that help to stabilize the global climate, that great challenge we share. In doing so, as we harness the wind and our own human power, we enjoy cleaner, healthier and happier lives. The journey to sustainability is its own reward."

The Departed Tailer - Martin Scorsese

Tags: Martin Scorsese, Jack Nicholson, Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, Martin Sheen, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin

great movie.. gives a new definition to good cop bad cop, with many twists and turns on the way.

Matt Damon plays the insurgent from mob boss costello in the Boston police department. DiCaprio has a bad upbringing, but plays the insurgent for the Boston police inside of costellos mob.

Definitely a great movie, lots of "head trauma".. Scorsese does not take his blood lightly, go big or go home with this one.

4/5 Kisses.

Dove - Real Beauty Campaign - Video

Tags: dove, real beauty, campaign, distorted views and vision

No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted.

This ad was done by dove, their new campaign for Real Beauty.

They have alot of guts changing the face of the cleanser world, and it's good for them for finnaly taking a stand and having the backing from their panel to do so. Their Real Beauty Workshops for girls gives young teens a look into what real beauty really is, in terms of classes and lectures. I'll admit I'm guessing thats what they are doing, but it sounds interesting!

Political step back in time to... 2006? Watch This.

Tags: vernon robinson, racist, anti-gay, anti-abortion, homophobe, another president to be?

Being a young Canadian, I find myself somewhat sheltered, or kept away from the whole traditional political battles that happen to our brothers to the south. I do try to keep on top of candidates for larger elections like the presidential, or congressional.

So in walks Vernon Robinson, an Out-Spoken Conservative Republican (please see dictionary under racist, bigot, homophobes, and skelator.)

It to this day, surprises me that there are individuals out there, who not only feel this way about other humans, but pay money to promote it and spread a message of pure evil.

We live in a world where were making so many advances everyday in rights, technology, and the human race, but jokers like this are kept around to run for congress? What gives?
